La Papillote, the french Chocolate wrapper
Noël… hum sorry Christmas is getting close and I have to show you what frenchs eat beyond any limitation !
I didn’t find any english word for those Chocolate wrappers so lets call them as Frenchmen call them, Papillotes !
The papillotes are from Lyon, our town (south east of France) and are one of the city’s tradition since 1790.
But papillote isn’t only made from chocolate or other tasty ingredients, but there is also paper !
As I told you, the history begun in 1790 in Lyon, in the “Bât d’Argent” street, near the town hall, at Mr. Jean Papillot’s pastry.
Mr Papillot had an apprentice who had his bride in a silk shop on the other side of the street. To seduce her, he used to send her chocolates with love letter wrapped around.
Mr Papillot realized that chocolates were gone, he starts to investigate and understood.
Later he reiterated this idea, wrap his chocolates in glossy papers replacing love letters by jokes or quotes…. the Papillotes were born !
Today, with 400 million papillotes sold annually, Revillon is the reference of papillotes manufacturer.
Traditionally, this sweet could be a chocolate or a fruit paste, but there are currently a variety of assortments : filled chocolate, praline, ganache…
Since then it became a tradition, and the papillotes have a special place on french tables around Christmas.
